Vote Nov 4th
Oct 30, 2008

It’s that time to vote for the next president of the United States, important political offices, and ballot initiatives.

We’re hearing about long lines, and you need to be prepared to stay in line and have your vote count. The longest waits will likely be on Election Day (Nov 4), so if you are able to vote early in your state, you may avoid the worst of it. Click here to see if you qualify for early voting in your state.

Here are some things to remember:

  • You can make it an event! Go with friends and/or bring phones, iPods, lawn chairs, food, reading materials, proper clothing, etc.
  • Don’t believe the polls if they say a candidate is winning or losing. They've been wrong before.
  • Ask for the day-off from work or class. Fake a cough, and call-in sick or play hooky.
  • Verify your polling location BEFORE you head to the polls by calling 1-866-OUR-VOTE or contact your local County Election Office. Or, use the Google Map voter tool.
  • Help others stay in line. Share your food, drink, music, reading materials, election protection information. Remember: we’re in this together.
  • Make sure to take this number with you so that if you encounter any problems, you can talk to nonpartisan election lawyers who can help: 1-866-OUR-VOTE or request a provisional ballot.
  • If you do run into any issues at the polls, Video the Vote and document election problems.

Go vote!

New York Times and Boston Globe on GB Performances/Tour
Aug 13, 2008

If you get a chance, hop over to The New York Times for a great wrap-up of the All Points West Festival, which took place over this past weekend. Here's what writer Nate Chinen had to say about Grizzly Bear:

Two of the best younger bands on the festival demonstrated affinities with Radiohead’s musical temperament, but in wildly divergent ways. Grizzly Bear, performing on Friday, was melodic and utterly engrossing. On “Little Brother,” the members of the band engaged in a four-part vocal harmony; on “Two Weeks,” a new song, Daniel Rossen played an electric piano ostinato while Edward Droste sang barbed reassurances. (“I told you I would stay,” is a refrain with a hint of reproach.)

And here's Boston Globe's quick interview with Ed before GB's performance in Boston tonight.

New Tees!
Aug 03, 2008

If you haven't checked out the Grizzly Bear Store before, now's a good time. There are two great new t-shirts with original artwork by J Penry and Brendan Donnelly. We just made them available on the site yesterday, and we were overwhelmed by the response, so orders are a tad backed up. But don't let that stop you from picking one up; we're refilling our stock now and even adding men's XL to the run!

Two Weeks live on David Letterman

Whelp, it looks like every time a video of the performance goes up, it gets taken down. Blech-nology.

If the YouTube embed stops working, you can view it at the CBS site itself. And if, for some strange reason, THAT stops working, repeatedly and rapidly move your eyes back and forth between the three still images in this post, listen to the MP3 below (or download it), and pretend the internet is IN YOUR MIND.

Billboard Shines a Light on New GB Album
Jul 06, 2008

Did you know Grizzly Bear are about to spend the next three weeks in the studio working on a new album? Here's the first little bit of info on it, along with some words from Ed on the upcoming Letterman performance and Radiohead tour.

Letterman Date Change
Jun 30, 2008

That's right. TV's a tough business.

And Grizzly Bear's date to perform on David Letterman has been moved from July 2nd to July 23rd. They'll still be debuting their new song live. Unfortunately the date change has made it impossible for Nico Muhly—composer extraordinaire—to join them.

But it also means that they'll be joined by Thomas Bartlett of the ever-enchanting Doveman. So it's one genius for another. We'll take that!

Cheers, happy summering, and happy 4th of July!

Three Great Reviews of LA Phil Concert
Mar 04, 2008

Check out what some folks had to say about the LA Philharmonic concert Grizzly Bear did this past weekend.

From the LA Times:

Grizzly Bear comprises four strong characters, each seemingly unique and indispensable to the band's intricate weave of sound, each handling the often unfamiliar emotions evoked by such sonic admixtures with intelligence and refinement—a bit like classical musicians.

Click for larger view
Thumbnail view of LA Philharmonic/Grizzly Bear concert review from LA Times

From Variety:

Opening with the gently shuffling "Easier," the band sounded both more delicate and spacious than on record. Each element locked in and out of phase with the others, and the songs flowed into each other.

[...]A show as well conceived and executed as this one can only help build a new audience for serious music.

And from the LA Weekly blog:

The band, one of the best in America, delivers a curious mix of folk, indie and art rock, creates this unclassifiable bouquet of beauty which has at its center some of the most stunning, spot-on harmonies recorded this century.

It was hard sitting on this news, but now the word is out: Grizzly Bear are slated to co-headline a concert with the LA Philharmonic on March 1st, as well as in the special Brooklyn Academy of Music concert series celebrating the work of Paul Simon.

From the LA Phil program notes:

The first half features the orchestra playing selections hand-picked by Grizzly Bear and the LA Phil, reflecting classical music's influence on the band's sound. Grizzly Bear's full set follows, showcasing their dreamy melodies, adventurous instrumentation and seductive vocal harmonies.

From the BAM notes:

In an unprecedented month-long residency at BAM, Paul Simon collaborates with an extraordinary range of artists to offer three musical constellations from the career of one of America's greatest songwriters.

Latin beats and 50s doo-wop fill New York City's nights with Songs from The Capeman. In Under African Skies, Simon rekindles a love affair with the sounds of South Africa and Brazil which began with his masterpieces Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints. Finally, Simon revisits the quiet railway stations, urban rhythms, and immigrant dreams of his greatest American Tunes.

It is in this American Tunes series that Grizzly Bear will take part, joining Olu Dara, The Roches, and Paul Simon himself.

Grizzly Bear Stereogum's #1 Live Show of 2007
Jan 02, 2008

Stereogum has named Grizzly Bear's Wordless Music Concert, at the New York Society for Ethical Culture (Nov. 3), its favorite show of 2007.

“[T]his show—as part of the Wordless Music Series, set in a secular room of spiritual design and heavenly acoustics—exhibited all the reasons for the late-year talk surrounding Grizzly Bear and its Friend EP. It's a special thing, to watch a group grow into something great. And pride aside (but hyperbole fully engaged), after this concert—the psych-whatever template coming easy, sounding otherworldly—I felt like I had seen one of most important bands in this indie epoch. And, particularly after hearing that perfectly pop-melodic Beatles-leaning new tune, one that's just getting started. Congrats Grizzly Bear—this is our way of saying you had a helluva year.”

Daniel Rossen in Concert
Dec 14, 2007

Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear will be participating in a special evening at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles—Concrete Frequency: Songs of the City, Tuesday, January 8. He will be playing one song that evening.

More details from the Concrete Frequency press release:

On Tuesday, January 8, Songs of the City features artists whose lives exist on the road - artists who travel with little else than their songwriting craft from one city to the next. Using music as expression for their unique urban experiences, Biirdie, Franklin Bruno, Zooey Deschanel, John Doe (from X), Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), Stevie Jackson (Belle and Sebastian), Sean Lennon, Sondre Lerche, Bob Mould, Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave), Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear), and additional special guests, each give a stripped-down, heartfelt performance that portrays their mobile, civic existence. Although their songs draw from diverse experiences, the emotions evoked are universal. Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes the living room for the city with this intimate evening, as these urban troubadours share the songs that have become the lo-fi soundtrack to our inner-city existence -- joy, urgency, depression, and heartache expressing the raw emotions contained and cultivated in the city.

From the Warp website:

New Seven inch from Grizzly Bear with two different versions of two of the best tracks from the album. The "Knife" version is extra luxury, with grandiose strings and extra "swoon," whilst the version of '"Easier" adds some acoustic depth. We personally think these interpretations are better than the ones on the album. A gentle summer 7 inch in a limited edition. 2. Canada's MUCHMUSIC caught us one morning in Toronto and got us to demonstrate how to use a Neti Pot. Naturally we obliged. Stereogum highlights the event here.

Knife Video!

Happy New Year!
Jan 09, 2007

A few things:

  1. The Wonderful Beach House will be opening alongside The Papercuts for our March 6th Bowery Ballroom show.
  2. The Girl Talk remix is almost done and it's amazing and is half mash up with—gulp—Clipse, half remix.
  3. CSS are almost done with their stellar cover of "Knife," which I'm excited to hear and might be released on a tour-only 7-inch. NME reports it.
  4. The elusive, mysterious and gorgeous "Knife" video is SO CLOSE TO COMPLETION I can taste it. The Encyclopedia Pictura Boys are working so hard!
  5. Since all those old links for MP3s of our KEXP sessions went down recently, The Smudge of Ashen Fluff (a great blog if you haven't seen it) has kindly done a post archiving them all.
  6. Thanks to everyone that voted for on at Stereogum! We were #3 of the year!!!
  7. We've just completed a guest post reviewing some songs at the ever-growing, ever-lovely, Paper Thin Walls. It's four tracks; check each one out.
  8. The Knife vs. Grizzly Bear mash up is done! Download it at super duper Brooklyn Vegan.

We can't wait to hit the road with some new gear (yup we're slowly accumulating things again) and to do our first ever headlining tour!

Thanks again for all the support!

Exclusive Track!
Jan 08, 2007

The original version of "Easier" featured on the band's album YELLOW HOUSE, released in September 2006. This alternate edit features all the harmonious and warming Grizzly Bear trademarks, with the album track being reworked to create something completely new and almost unrecognisable from the original. A must listen for fans of the band.

The track is only available for one week. Go to!
